PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a volume variable magnetic tape cassette which can be reduced in size without losing the strength at the stocking of the cassette tape and a reproducing apparatus of the same tape cassette. SOLUTION: This tape cassette is provided with a plurality of cassette halves 11, 12 obtained by dividing the cassette case externally loading the tape wound between a pair of reels 1a, 1b and a mechanism to change the internal volume of cassette through the processes that the cassette halves 11, 12 are separated from each other to enlarge the internal volume of cassette for recording or reproducing operation and the cassette halves 11, 12 are closely located to reduce the internal volume of cassette for stocking the cassette tape.
