PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a loss due to a return time without lowering picture quality even in an electromechanical optical modulation element of a long response time requiring a long time for a return and to remarkably improve a substantial response time. SOLUTION: The array type optical modulation element is constituted so that the electromechanical optical modulation elements performing optical modulation by displacement operation of a flexible part by electrostatic force and the elastic return operation of this flexible part are arranged in two-dimensional matrix, and the reset operation of the optical modulation elements are performed simultaneously with a write-in operation period for scan lines excepting a present scan line, and are ended before the write-in operation of the optical modulation elements, and the write-in operation of respective scan lines are performed continuously to be driven.
