The invention relates to a device for detecting the flow direction of a gaseous mass flow passing through a flow channel, to a corresponding method and to the applications thereof. The invention is characterized in that a unit (4) dividing the gaseous mass flow into a main and a partial flow is provided in the flow channel, said unit having two flow openings by means of which the unit may be integrated into the flow channel. Said unit has an inner flow structure that divides the mass flow that passes through the flow opening to the unit into a main (2) and a partial (3) flow in such a way that the partial flow is obstructed by a flow resistance induced by the main flow as the latter passes through the unit, whereby two spatial areas (7, 8) are formed inside said unit (4) which are separated from each other by the inner flow structure and in which the flow speeds of the main and partial flows differ from each other. Flow sensors are mounted in the spatial areas (7, 8) whose signals (9, 10) may be used for determining the flow direction of the material flow passing through the unit by means of an evaluation unit (11).
