PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which can illuminate a display screen by utilizing both external light such as sunlight and light from an incorporated lighting source, and moreover, has a high utilization efficiency of light in any of the illuminating modes. SOLUTION: In this element 31, a liquid crystal layer 34 is enclosed between a front side substrate 33 having a transparent electrode 36 and a rear side substrate 32 having a reflection electrode 40. A light source 44, being a sidelight, is provided at a side face of this liquid crystal display panel. A light transmission pattern 42 is provided on a surface of the reflection electrode 40 so that the pattern is denser as the position under consideration is separated more from the light source 44. The surface of the reflection electrode 40 is covered with an alignment layer 41.
