The present invention relates generally to telecommunications, and more specifically, to a system and method of teleconferencing. Existing telephony systems suffer from a number of problems including system complexity, limite d access and implementation of services on fixed hardware which results in lon g time to bring new products to market. Internet applications implement teleconferencing on end user personal computers, without the network performing any processing of data streams or guaranteeing quality of service in the transmission. The invention provides for an intelligent server which executes a separate mixer for each user, where the mixer is dedicated to the resources available to that user. This allows for an open and flexible teleconference system which can operate over multiple networks.
