<p>An apparatus (figure 5) and method (figure 1) for compressing data is disclosed. The apparatus and method comprise: an analysis of data to identify a relationship between a plurality of data elements in the data (15), reordering the data based on the identified relationship between the plurality of data elements (20), and identifying common sequences in the reordered data (25) and storing these references using a data index (35). The apparatus and method of the present invention further includes reordering the data to arrange related data elements adjacent to one another (25), and compressing the reordered data to generate a compressed data set (25 and 30).</p> |
