Light material used e.g. as sound and heat insulation is produced from expanded polystyrene granules and an inorganic binder

A lightweight material is produced from expanded polystyrene granules and an inorganic binder. Production of a light material comprises mixing expanded polystyrene granulate particles with a pre finished binder consisting of an aqueous colloidal silicic acid dispersion; or mixing polystyrene granulate particles with the aqueous colloidal silicic acid dispersion and/or water glass solution and then mixing with hydrated lime; or mixing polystyrene granulate particles with milk of lime and then mixing with the aqueous colloidal silicic acid dispersion and/or water glass solution. The polystyrene granulate particles are completely enclosed by the binder. The weight ratio of SiO2/CaO is 0.5-1:0.5-1. The mixture obtained is hardened.
