The method involves continuously or periodically transmitting sensor signals; receiving the sensor signals reflected by objects; classifying the objects according to reflection characteristic, location, speed and shape; generating an image of the vehicle's surroundings from the detected objects; and generating a control signal for the component to be controlled depending on the image generated. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for advance control of vehicle components, e.g. gearbox and lights.
