New cyclohexane derivatives with at least one axial difluoromethyl, difluoromethoxy, fluoromethyl, fluoromethoxy, sulfur pentafluoride, trifluoromethyl-sulfur tetrafluoride or sulfonyl fluoride group at position one and/or four. Cyclohexane derivatives of formula (I): R<1>, R<2> = H, CN, F, OCHF2, OCF3, OCHFCF3, OCH2CF3 or OCF2CF3, or 1-12C alkyl (optionally substituted with at least one halogen or CN group and optionally with one or more non-adjacent CH2 groups replaced by -O-, -S-, -CO-, cyclobutane-1,3-diyl, -COO-, -OCO-, -OCOO- or -CH=CH- in such a way that hetero atoms are not directly linked); X<1>, X<2> = H, CHF2, OCHF2, CH2F, OCH2F, SF5, SF4CF3 or SO2F in the axial position, provided that at least one of these two groups is not H; Q = -CH2- or -O-; A<1>, A<2> = (a) trans-1,4-cyclohexylene (optionally with 1 or more non-adjacent CH2 groups replaced by O and/or S), (b) 1,4-phenylene (optionally with one or two CH groups replaced by N), (c) 1,4-bicyclo(2.2.2)octylene, piperidine-1,4-diyl, naphthalene-2,6-diyl or its decahydro or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro derivatives, (d) 1,4-cyclohexenylene or (e) a group of formula (Y), where groups of types (a), (b) and (d) may also be substituted with CN, Cl or F; Z<1>, Z<2> = -COO-, -OCO-, -CH2O-, -O-, -OCH2-, -CH2CH2-, -CH=CH-, -C equivalent to C-, a single bond, -(CF2)u- or trans -(CF=CF)v-; u = 2, 3 or 4; v = 1, 2 or 3; n, m = 0, 1, 2 or 3; (m+n) = 1, 2, 3 or 4. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a process for the production of (I) in which X<1> and/or X<2> = SF5 from the corresponding thiols (II) in which X<1>, X<2> = H or SH in the axial position (provided that both groups are not H), by oxidation to the corresponding disulfide followed by treatment with a suitable fluorinating agent; (b) liquid crystal (LC) media with at least two LC components, containing at least one compound (I); (c) LC display elements containing an LC medium as in (b); and (d) electro-optical display elements containing an LC medium as in (b) as the dielectric.
