The invention relates to a system and a method for monitoring, controlling, tracking and handling objects, e.g. transport containers. According to the invention, at least one stationary or mobile write/read device and at least one mobile data carrier mounted directly on the object are provided. Said da ta carrier has means for storing identification data and object-specific data a nd means for the wireless transmission of data to the write/read device. The mobile data carrier also has means for acquiring and storing environmental data and/or other measured values. The identification data, object-specific data and/or environmental data/measured values are automatically sent at predetermined intervals using a broadcasting method or are conveyed to the write/read device on request from the same.
