The vibration generator consists of an oscillator module(I), which has a drive unit(10), and an insertion module(II) which has a coupling device. The oscillator and insertion modules are relatively separable and movable components. The drive unit and coupling device are in frictional contact at points which are located on wedge-form bevels in accordance with each set position of the oscillator module with regard to the insertion module. An Independent claim is included for a procedure for generating seismic vibrations in a granular medium in which the insertion module is placed in the granular medium, introducing the oscillator module into the insertion module until the drive unit of the oscillator module in a predetermined set position is in frictional contact with the coupling device of the insertion module, and operating the drive to generate vibrations and transmit mechanical vibrations to the medium.
