The invention concerns a method for arylation of acetophenone type compounds. The invention is particularly useful for making alpha -phenylacetophenones. The arylation method of the invention is characterised in that it consists in reacting said compound with a chloroaromatic or bromoaromatic compound bearing at least one electron-attracting group in said halogen atom ortho or para position in the presence of a strong base.
