The gas vent (4.2) is engaged by a bolt (2) boss (2.1) moving normal to the barrel axis (4), and the bolt positively engages the breech slide on the barrel and in this way when activated locks out any relative movement between barrel and slide. The positive engagement between bolt and slide is provided by a bolt ramp piece and associated recess in the slide. The main body of the slide has extensions to the sides completing a guide in the barrel. As the cartridge is fired, it passes and clears the vent (4.2), thus admitting the barrel gas and so driving the bolt boss (3.1) downward in piston fashion so the bolt locks via its top and ramps into the barrel and in this way arrests the breech.
