A low-pressure mercury discharge lamp (101) comprises a hermetically sealed translucent enclosure (1), a couple of electrodes (2, 2') which are sealed in both ends of the enclosure (1) and disposed in such a way that the distance between one of the electrodes (2, 2') and the corresponding one of sealed parts (1a, 1a') is longer than that between the other and the other corresponding sealed part, a mercury evolving structure (5) sealed in the enclosure, and a discharge medium containing mercury evolved from the mercury evolving structure (5) and an inert gas. The sealed part (1a) has a most-cold portion, and mercury is sealed in the mercury evolving structure (5). Hence, surplus mercury is hardly present in the enclosure (1), the strength of light emitted increases sharply, the mercury gathered on the most-cold portion hardly moves to other portions in the enclosure (1), and thereby the lamp characteristics are stable.
|
