A regenerated hydrogenation catalyst having a specific value of the metal tolerance calculated from the void volume of the catalyst, void diameter thereof, amount of vanadium deposited thereon, external surface area thereof per unit volume, etc.; and a method of hydrogenating a heavy oil with the catalyst. Also provided is a method of hydrogenating a heavy oil using a hydrogenation catalyst in which the metal tolerance calculated from the void volume of the catalyst, void diameter thereof, amount of vanadium deposited thereon, external surface area thereof per unit volume, etc. is not smaller than the amount of vanadium deposited in the hydrogenation of the heavy oil.
