A video editing apparatus and method whereby a video recording is split into its individual picture frames and means are provided to take a small vertical strip of each picture frame (see fig. 1). Moving from one frame to the next, the sampled strip also moves along the frame as shown in the figure. These strips are then combined on a display forming a video browser (4A, 4B). Editing points can then be readily set using this browser even for a plurality of video sequences. As an extra feature the audio waveform corresponding to the sampled video footage can also be displayed.
