A manual shaft (18) built into the gearbox (11) is connected to a switching lever (19) to turn between park, reverse and driving settings and is also mechanically connected to a park control mechanism (20) arranged in the gearbox. A switch locking shaft (26) joined to the brake pedal turns from first to second settings in response to the pedal, using a locking element (32) on shaft (26) to engage the locked element (30) with the switching in the first setting. The locking shaft is progressed to the second setting by a spring (35) interposed between a second locking shaft (27) and the locked element. The shaft (27) connects to a lock cylinder used to change from first to second setting in accordance with the brake pedal and a second locking element (33) fitted to the second shaft (27) engages the locked element (31) when the shaft (27) is in its first setting.
