PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeder capable of stably feeding a sheet and excellent in feeding performance of the sheet. SOLUTION: This sheet feeder is provided with a sheet loading plate 9 to load a large number of sheets 6, a lifter 13 to vertically move the sheet loading plate 9, a pickup roller 19 attachable/detachable to/from the highest sheet on the sheet loading plate 9, an upper limit detecting sensor 33 supported at a specified position to detect the height of the highest sheet on the sheet loading plate, and a CPU to control the drive of the lifter 13 and the pick-up roller 19. The CPU inputs the detected value of the upper limit detecting sensor 33 in its memory at the timing when the pick-up roller 19 is brought into contact with the highest sheet 6 and before the pick-up roller 19 is rotated. Whether or not the detected value reaches a specified value suitable for the feed by the pick-up roller 19 is judged, the number of the fed sheets is counted, and the driving time of the lifter 13 is calculated based on the counted number counted by a counting means.
