[Also in Division H1] A coaxial cable has an outer conductor whose inner surface is roughened to tightly grip the core insulation. This roughening of the outer conductor is carried out at 15, preferably by sand blasting, before the conductor is formed in a forming die 16 around the cable core 10 and seam welded at 32 with a larger diameter than required, the cable then being drawn through a sinking die 42 to reduce the diameter of this conductor by 5 to 40% so that it squeezes on to the core insulation. The conductor thickness is not changed by the drawing operation. The cable is pulled continuously at uniform speed past the welding station and sinking die by a capstan 50. Annealed aluminium is used as the condutor material. |
