摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To diagnose accurately a failure in the rotational position sensor system of an engine equipped with a variable valve timing mechanism. SOLUTION: Even if the rotational phase of a suction camshaft (displacement angle) is changed relative to a crankshaft by a variavle valve timing mechanism, the number of input actions ofθ7 (θ8) cam position pulses fed from a cam position sensor to be input betweenθ1 crank pulse inputs from a crank angle sensor takes a constant value (=1) at all times. The diagnosis of the rotational position sensor system is performed by counting, the number of input actions of theθ7 (θ8) cam position pulses to be input between theθ1 crank pulse inputs using a cam position pulse input number count value CVVTC and comparing the value CVVTC with the specified value (S11).
