PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating method of a refining furnace, by which the sticking state of metal is controlled in good condition without damaging the refractory of a furnace opening part and a sidewall in the furnace while securing the productivity in a converter. SOLUTION: According to the distributing state of the stuck metel in the furnace, exclusively using lance 5' for blow-refining or commonly using lance 5 having nozzles 7 for melting the stuck metal, is selected, and either lance is alternately used while continuing in one or more heats. The stuck metal distribution is observed with eyes or a monitor camera and the prescribed lance is used based on this state. In the case of being the heat for using the commonly using lance having the nozzles for melting the stuck metal, the oxygen is blown in the range of 3-10% of the oxygen for blow- refining in the middle stage except till killing the disturbance of gas flowing in the furnace at the initial stage and on and after measuring with a sublance at the end stage. At the initial stage and the end stage, the positive melting of stuck metal is not executed and the purge gas is mainly supplied from the nozzles 7 for melting the stuck metal to prevent the clogging. The jetting direction of the oxygen for melting the stuck metal is directed downward at the angle of 40-90 deg. to the lance.
