PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aqueous coating agent capable of making the use of hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose trimellitate being a low pH dissolution base in an aqueous base by making the coating agent include hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose trimellitate and a plasticizer. SOLUTION: This coating agent comprises (A) hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose trimellitate having preferably <=10μm average particle diameter and (B) a plasticizer (e.g. triethyl citrate, triacetylene, acetylated monoglyceride, dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, etc.). The coating agent contains 3-15 wt.% of the component A. Preferably the amount of the component B added is 20-60 wt.% based on the component A. The coating agent is obtained by dispersing the pulverized component A into an aqueous solution containing the component B with ordinary stirring preferably at <=40 deg.C solution temperature.
