PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device capable of detecting microorganisms even in the presence of a hindrance (e.g. erythrocyte) in high concentration with means not using a radioactive substance and not entering the inside of a container. SOLUTION: This invention provides a device and method for detecting the presence of microorganisms in a clinical or nonclinical specimen such as blood or other humor by incubating the specimen in a transparent, hermetically sealed container 1 by means of sterility incubation medium 3. The presence and identification of microorganisms are determined by detecting or measuring the change in pH of the specimen or the change in the generation of CO2 in the specimen from the outside of the container by means of a sensor 2 having an indicating medium in itself, attached to the inner surface of the container or to a sealer for hermetically sealing the container.
