PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of shortening the paper feed time while removing the skew. SOLUTION: This paper feeder is provided with a paper feed roller 2 fixed to a paper feed roller shaft 1 and rotated to feed a paper sheet in the paper feed mode; a paper feed roller to hold and carry the paper sheet fed by the paper feed roller 2; a gear train 5 to drive the paper sheet roller 2 and the paper feed roller in an interlocking manner with each other through a common drive source; and a switching means 6 to switch the connection condition with the disconnection condition of the gear train, and after a tip of the paper sheet is slightly passed through a holding part of the paper feed roller, the paper feed roller is once stopped, and the paper sheet is prevented from being meandered by aligning the tip of the paper sheet with the holding part of the paper feed roller by rotating the paper feed roller in the reverse direction. The paper feed roller shaft is freely fitted to a paper feed roller drive gear, and the drive in the reverse direction of the paper feed roller to prevent the meandering of the tip of the paper sheet caused by the free fitting is not transmitted to the paper feed roller shaft.
