PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for shifting down a transmission to realize rapid shift down and improve the acceleration characteristics of a vehicle. SOLUTION: In an automobile having an internal combustion engine 1 coupled to the drive wheel of the automobile through the input shaft 4 of a main transmission 3, a method and device to control shift down of the main transmission 3 having a further higher speed and a further lower speed are provided. Further, an electric machine 9 is provided to be coupled to the internal combustion engine 1 and the input shaft 4 of the main transmission 3 through an auxiliary switch transmission 11 by which a change gear ratio is variable. In this case, to shift down the main transmission 3, the number Nsyn of synchronous revolutions at a further lower speed of the main transmission 3 is adjusted according to a change of the change gear ratio of an auxiliary switch transmission 11. Thus, the number Nsyn of synchronous revolutions is adjusted by the increase in the change gear ratio of at least the auxiliary switch transmission 11.
