PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cosmetic free from such problems as odor, discoloration, stability with time and skin irritancy, good in spreadability, having freshening feeling when applied, and also having high moisturizing effect and softening effect by including a specific carbonate compound. SOLUTION: This cosmetic is obtained by including (A) >=0.01 wt.% of a carbonate compound of the formula (R1 and R2 are each a 6-30C hydrocarbon group) and, as necessary (B) such ingredients as oily component, water-soluble component, surfactant, moisturizer, thickening agent, antiseptic, pigment, powder, pH adjustor, antioxidant, ultraviolet light absorber, perfume, coloring matter and purified water; wherein the ingredient A is prepared by reaction of a dialkyl carbonate (e.g. dimethyl carbonate) with an alcohol having R1 and R2 at 90-250 deg.C under reflux at normal pressures. This cosmetic is used in the form of cream, milky lotion, skin lotion, foundation, cleansing preparation, lipstick, etc.
