PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a heat insulating material which is free from the formation of poisonous gases and is nonflammable and exhibits high heat insulating performance by preventing lowering of the heat insulating characteristic even when moisture adheres to it and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This heat insulating material is produced by heating obsidian to obtain an obsidian foamed body, then treating it to form an obsidian foamed body 11 (obsidian foamed body block) having prescribed sizes, further kneading the obsidian foamed body 11 with a clay material 12 in a prescribed ratio to obtain a composite material 10 and, after adding lime and water, molding the obtained mixture. In this process, as the obsidian foamed body 11 which is excellent in nonflammability, heat insulative property, lightness, strengths and noise absorbability and the clay material 12 capable of absorbing and desorbing moisture are used, the objective high-performance heat insulating material provided with these characteristics can be obtained. |
