PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent print shift due to step-out of print head and movement of a booklet by preventing a print head from being caught at the binding part during print operation due to difference of thickness between left and right pages of the booklet. SOLUTION: The printer comprises a platen, a print head reciprocating along the longitudinal direction of the platen, and means for carrying a booklet being printed to the print head in the longitudinal direction of the binding part orthogonal to the longitudinal direction of the platen. The printing method comprises a step ST13 for reading out magnetic page information JP, or the like, through a magnetic reading means, a step ST14 for reading optical page information KP through an optical reading means, and steps ST18, ST21 for calculating thicker right or left side of opening page based on the read out information and the total number of pages of the booklet. If the right side is thicker, a printing direction determining means moves the head from right side to the left side and printing is performed by method 1 ST19 otherwise the head is moved from the left side to the right side and printing is performed by method 2 ST22.
