The equipment includes a support for locating a fixed reference point adjacent to a patient's body. A path is computed and a predefined direction through the puncture entry point is adjusted using the support. An instrument holder moves the puncture instrument along the defined path. Depth of penetration is determined and the extent of the movement of the instrument along the predetermined path is limited.
