1,183,373. Cobalt hydro-phosphin carbonyls; hydrogenation. MONTECATINI EDISON S.p.A. 28 Feb., 1967 [4 March, 1966], No. 9531/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] The invention comprises cobalt hydrophosphin-carbonyls of the formula wherein R is a C 1 -C 10 alkyl group. They may be obtained by condensing in hydrocarbon solution, generally at 40‹ to 150‹ C., and under hydrogen (e.g. at from 1 to 100 atmospheres) a binuclear compound of the general formula [Co(CO) 3 (PR 3 )] 2 with an appropriate trialkyl phosphine in the presence of an olefin so that 2 moles of CO are eliminated from the starting compound for each cobalt atom. The hydrocarbon solvent may be an alkane, cycloalkane or arene and the olefin is preferably ethylene or propylene. Examples are given for the production of products in which R is butyl, ethyl and n-hexyl respectively. The products are useful as hydrogenation catalysts, e.g. for the hydrogenation of ketones and saturated and unsaturated aldehydes, examples being given for the use of the products as hydrogenation catalysts in the hydrogenation in n-heptane of acetone to isopropyl alcohol, 2-ethylhexenal to 2-ethyl hexanol, n-butyraldehyde to n-butyl alcohol and acetophenone to alpha-phenyl ethyl alcohol. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 942,435. |
