PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect arriving and sending operations of a recording medium with a single detector by providing a first lever member that is pressed by the tip of the recording medium to rotate, and the detector that detects a position along the circumference of a second lever member rotated interlocking with a sending operation of a sending mechanism portion. SOLUTION: When a motor for conveyance is driven, sheets Pa are separated one by one after passing between a sending roller and a pinch roller and are fed, and are fed responsive to a recording operation of a recording head. On the way of a conveying passage of such sheets Pa, a conveying state detecting portion 28 for detecting a coveying state of the sheets Pa is provided. This conveying state detecting portion 28 has a first lever member 58 than can shield an optical path between a light emitting element 56a and a light receiving element 56b and can oscillate around a shaft 60 according to the movement of the sheets Pa. In addition, a second lever member 52 is provided which is fixed to a rotation shaft 50 whose one end is fixed by a belt pulley 57 and shields light between the light emitting element 56a and the light receiving element 56b according to rotation position of the rotation shaft 50.
