PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an operator from committing misjudgement or getting impossible to read when a failure is generated in either segment of a liquid crystal display panel. SOLUTION: Failure in electronic components 12a, 12b... of a vehicle is diagnosed in conformity to an operational signal given by an operating switch 11, and either of a plurality of on-off patterns is selected on the basis of the result from diagnosis, and all segments of a liquid crystal display panel 10 are turned on and off simultaneously with the selected on-off pattern. Even if any segment of the panel 10 goes in failure, the operator can check the on-off operation as long as any other segment is operating normally in on-off operation.
