A miniaturized electrical plug or socket connector consists of two concentric tubular bodies e.g. 26 and 30, the outer surface of each of which has grooves to accommodate resilient blade contacts 36 and 38, the outer surfaces of which lie flush with the outer surfaces of the bodies. The contacts are formed with the same cross-section as the grooves and may be stuck in position, or held by the coaxial sleeve arrangement, an outer sleeve 34 being provided which also forms an hermatic seal. The ends of the contacts are of undulating shape to mate with complementary shapes on the engaging contacts and the bodies are relieved to permit inward contact movement, or the contacts relieved to permit outward movement, during engagement. A centring pin may be provided along the hollow axis of the plug. A keying arrangement may facilitate correct rotational engagement, or the plug and socket may be relatively rotatable to provide a multiplicity of engagement positions. In a further arrangement, Fig. 12 (not shown), auxiliary contacts 78 provided in each connector in an outer ring are much narrower than the main contacts. In this case, the plug and socket are first mated with the main contacts out of alignment and then relatively rotated until the auxiliary contacts engage one another, at which point the main contacts will almost completely overlap. A relay, energized through the auxiliary contacts, then closes the main contact circuits. |
