PURPOSE: An intake system of an internal combustion engine is provided to optimize intake and combustion efficiency in the entire range by generating a swirl corresponding to a driving condition of an engine. CONSTITUTION: An intake duct(3) is formed in a cylinder head(1), and an intake port(5) having an intake valve(7) is formed in the front end of the intake duct. The intake valve closes the intake port employing a return spring(9) and opens the intake port by the force of a locker arm(11). A valve guide(15) having a helical groove and a linear groove is interposed in the outer face of a valve stem(13) having a protrusion to smoothly lift and rotate the intake valve. The valve stem and the valve guide are parts of an intake valve rotating unit varying a swirl corresponding to a driving condition of an engine. The protrusion of the valve stem is selectively combined with the grooves to open and close the intake valve. When the engine is operated at a low speed range, an actuator(25) rotates the valve guide counterclockwise to place the protrusion in the helical groove. The intake valve rotates by the protrusion. With rotation of the intake valve, the intake port is opened and closed. Then, a strong swirl is generated in the air sucked via the intake port. When the engine is operated at a high speed range, the actuator rotates the valve guide clockwise to place the protrusion in the linear groove. The intake valve is restrained from rotating by the protrusion and linearly lifted up and down. Then, the intake port is opened and closed and a normal swirl is generated in the intake air.
