[Also in Division Fl] In a water turbine/pump in which the drive between the electric machine and the runner is taken directly from the periphery of the runner blades 1, the machine pole-wheel or one member of a magnetic coupling which drives the machine pole-wheel, runs in a circumferential channel communicating with the water passage 5 and built up of non-magnetic material. In the first arrangement, Fig. 6, the rotor 23 is secured directly to the blades 1 and its poles 11 and windings 12 run in water separated from the stator 9 by the non-magnetic casing 15. As a modification of this arrangement, the rotor may be unexcited and the machine act as an induction generator. In the second form, Fig. 1, the runner carries a castellated magnetic ring 7 rotating in the channel 15. The machine rotor 10 rides in roller or other bearings 16, and is magnetically coupled through a castellated ring 13, to the ring 7, flux being provided by coil 14. Various arrangements of the castellated members is described, and the rotor poles may be used to provide coupling with the ring 7.
