PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tape thickness detecting device capable of improving workability in a manufacturing process. SOLUTION: When photodiodes 33a2, 33b2 light receive a beam from a light emitting diode 33a1 transmitting through a leader or a trailer, when a light receiving voltage detection circuit 80 detects a value of an output voltage to a system controller 60, a microcomputer 50 compares this detection voltage value with a voltage value stored in a memory 51, and judges that a tape length corresponding to each voltage value is a length of a video tape while running, and since the tape thickness is detected, the necessity of precisely adjusting the light emitting diode 33a1 and the photodiodes 33a2, 33b2 etc., in the manufacturing process is eliminated, and the workability in the manufacturing process is improved.
