PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the image reader that can obtain an image with high quality even from an original where a character image and a photographic image are intermingled. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with an integration number control circuit 1616 to vary number of times of delay integration processing by a time delay integration sensor 161 depending on the attribute of a read image, and also with an amplification adjuster which sets an amplification factor in response to the number of times of the delay integration. Thus, the number of times of the delay integration processing and the amplification factor optimum to the attribute of the read image are set. Thus, an image with high quality can be read even from an original where a character image and a photographic image are intermingled.
