PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to form multi-hierarchism of holders constituting a holder hierarchy arranged at least by one, i.e., plural stages of folders, in a document management system and to register and retrieve a document accompanied by multimedia data including at least static images. SOLUTION: The document management sever system 1 includes a server side document file 54 for storing plural documents by a document substantial format, a document information management data base 51 having plural holders each of which stores a pointer allowing at least one of plural documents to be referred to by a document identifier, storing at least one holder hierarchy forming plural stages determined by master-slave positional relation of the upper and lower stages of these holders and storing document information including the attribute values of respective documents and plural files 53 for storing multimedia indexes for retrieving a document accompanied by multimedia data including at least static images. A client system 2 includes a document file 7 for storing documents to be registered previously prepared so as to be registered in the document file 54.
