PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a record display medium having high contrast between a record display part and background and excellent in rewriting characteristics in repetitive use of recording and erasing by incorporating a chiral agent into smectic liquid crystal. SOLUTION: This record display medium comprises a smectic liquid crystal/ polymer composite membrane formed by dispersing smectic liquid crystal in a polymer matrix and the smectic liquid crystal contains a chiral agent. In this medium, the chiral agent enters the liquid crystal, a scattering characteristic by which the orientation property of the liquid crystal is disordered, is enhanced in the case of recording and displaying and the contrast between a record display part and a background is enhanced. By incorporating the chiral agent in 1-20 wt.% ratio against the smectic liquid crystal, the record display medium excellent in rewriting characteristics in repetitive use of recording and erasing is obtained. The chiral agent is preferably a compound represented by formula (where * shows the position of asymmetric carbon).
