PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an evaluation method in which the nonheating measurement and the quatitative evaluation of carbon of kinds in a wide range can be performed by a method wherein the absolute value of a difference between the aliphatic longitudinal relaxation time and the aromatic longitudinal relaxation time of the carbon is found and a coke drum strength after dry distillation is estimated on the basis of the relationship between the preliminarily found difference between the relaxation times and the coke drum strength. SOLUTION: The absolute value of a difference between the aliphatic longitudinal relaxation time and the aromatic longitudinal relaxation time of coal whose coke drum strength is known is measured in advance. A working curve which expresses the relationship between the coke drum strength and the absolute value of the difference between the longitudinal relaxation times is created. Then, the absolute value of a difference between the aliphatic longitudinal relaxation time and the aromatic longitudinal relaxation time of coal to be evaluated is measured. A coke drum strength which corresponds to the absolute value of the difference is obtained on the basis of the working curve which is created in advance. As a result, the quality of the coal is evaluated.
