The device operates to lock the joint when the vehicle is reversed. The coupler (3) for a trailer is mounted on a base which slides on the chassis of the tractor vehicle (1). A binding system (14) allows the locking of the base in a position against a stop limiting forward or rearward movement. in the forward position, a male component (17) which is solidly connected to the underside of the swan-neck of the trailer (2) engages a female component (18) locking the trailer against rotation. When the chassis is in the rearward position, the two components (17, 18) disengage allowing free movement of the trailer w.r.t. to the rear part of the tractor unit.
