Novel compounds of the formula <FORM:1107741/C2/1> wherein A is a -CH=CH- or -CH2-CH2- radical R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, bromoaryl, carboxylic acyl or aralkyl group, the R groups being the same or different, and R1 is an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group, are obtained by reacting Grignard reagents R1MgX, wherein X represents halogen, e.g. bromine or iodine, with the appropriate ketonic compound and hydrolysing the product. Therapeutic compositions having estrogenic properties and useful for promoting growth in meat-producing animals contain the above compounds as active ingredient. The composition may be in a form suitable for oral or parenteral application, e.g. as a constituent of an animal foodstuff. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 951,349. |
