[Also in Divisions B3 and H1] A device for punching material by means of a spark discharged in a space one of the boundary walls of which is formed by the material to be punched is characterized in that another of the boundary walls of the space consists of a liquid surface. The device shown, which is for punching holes in a paper tape or sheet 8, has three spark gaps and comprises main electrodes 1 and ignition electrodes 2 arranged in the bottom of an insulating container 3 filled with liquid 5. The surface of the liquid, apart from the space between the electrodes, is covered by an insulating plate 6. The electrodes 1 are surrounded by insulating tubes 9. The punch matrix 11 is forced against the sheet 8 by springs 13 so that the spark discharge forms in a gasfilled space 12. In a modification, the spark discharge space consists of a rotatable disc (23), Figs. 3 and 4 (both not shown), coated with liquid in a container (25). The spark discharge occurs between the two main electrodes (21) which are arranged on both sides of the disc (23). An ignition electrode (22) may be provided. A plate (27) supports the material (28) to be punched which is forced against the plate by springs (29) acting on a punch matrix (30). Two electric circuits for operating sliding spark discharges are described.</p> |
