In a photographic composing-machine having a rotatable opaque disc D, Fig. 1, with transparent characters, each font extending over the whole circumference of the disc, and a shutter disc S, with a slot 235 for allowing projection of a selected character, the disc is stopped in approximate position for figuring a selected character by moving a selected blade element 390A, 390B or 390C, Figs. 1, 5 and 6-8, into position to intercept one of three pins 325A, 325B, 325C projecting from the disc. The disc is then indexed into exact position by a pawl element 85 having a nose portion 87 engaging one of a series of notches 25 in the disc, Figs. 1 and 9, under the control of a cam 75 and a gauging surface 101.
