PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the scanner that is easy to use for the user and scans an image in an excellent way by providing a roller for a main body retractably and providing a the scanner with a mechanism that controls start/end of reading depending on a projected posture and an escaping posture. SOLUTION: The user grips the handy scanner 1 by a hand and presses the scanner 1 onto an original 17 and moves it on the original 17. Then a roller 3 in contact with the original 17 slides on the original 17 in a non-contact direction to take a 1st posture, at which an image of the original can be read. When the handy scanner 1 is detached from the original 17, the roller 3 slides in a non-detaching direction to take a 2nd posture, where the reading of the image is finished. Thus, the start and the end of reading the original 17 are conducted in a natural operation without the switch operation to start/complete the reading different from a conventional scanner by allowing the user to have only to move the handy scanner 1 on the original 17.
