PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape which shows little decrease in travelling durability or electromagnetic conversion characteristics even when the tape is stored for a long time, in which recorded information can be stably reproduced, and which is advantageous especially for recording computer data, and to provide its producing method. SOLUTION: This magnetic tape has a magnetic layer containing ferromagnetic powder and binder resin containing chlorine atoms in the molecular structure on one side of a supporting body or with a nonmagnetic layer interposed, and has a back coating layer containing a binder resin having no chlorine atom in the molecular structure on the other surface of the supporting body. The amt. of sodium component in the back coating layer is <=110 ppm, and the amt. of calcium component is <=60 ppm. To produce the magnetic tape above described, zirconium particles are used as beads to be dispersed for the preparation of the coating liquid of the back coating layer.
