PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon dioxide sensor which operates at room temperatures and provides sufficient sensitivity and responsivity, a high selectivity and a superior moisture resistance. SOLUTION: This sensor has a detecting electrode and a counter electrode both set in touch with a solid electrolyte. The solid electrolyte contains a metallic ion conductor, and the detecting electrode has a hydrogencarbonate layer containing hydrogencarbonate and/or hydrogencarbonate ions, and a current collector. The hydrogencarbonate layer preferably contains any one or more of lithium hydrogencarbonate, sodium hydrogencarbonate, potassium hydrogencarbonate, rubidium hydrogencarbonate, caesium hydrogencarbonate, magnesium hydrogencarbonate and calcium hydrogencarbonate.
