PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a brine cooler capable of dealing with an environmental problem such as a prevention of global warming or the like and preventing freezing in a brine heat exchanger. SOLUTION: The brine cooler has a screw compressor 1, a condenser 3, a main expansion valve 5 and an evaporator 6 sequentially connected by piping to cool brine flowing through the evaporator 6. The cooler comprises a refrigerant using an ammonia refrigerant, the evaporator 6 of a plate type heat exchanger obtained by laminating a plurality of plates, and a capacity control means for controlling a capacity of the compressor 1 according to a flow rate of the brine.
