PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a level gauge and a level measuring method which facilitate maintenance with a higher measuring accuracy in a wide dynamic range. SOLUTION: Water inside a container 3 installed under water is drained by an underwater pump 6, a drain port 5 is closed to prevent the backflow of water and water is made to flow into the container 3 from an inflow port 8 of water provided at an upper part of the container 3 to detect the rise in the level as caused by the water flowing in with a switch 9. The water level of a dam or the like is determined by computation from a difference between the time at which the water begins to flow into the container 3 and the time at which the rising water level is detected by the switch 9. Then, the container 3 is drained. This series of operations of detecting the water level with the switch 9 are repeated. This permits cleaning of the inside of the container 3, the inflow port 8 and the drain port 5 of water while the water level of the dam or the like is measured to accomplish the maintenance of a level gauge automatically. The change of the shape of the container 3 allows changing of a dynamic range of the measurement of the level thereby improving measuring accuracy.
