摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antiferroelectric liquid crystal display device with high picture quality by aligning antiferroelectric liquid crystal with improved order and stability. SOLUTION: Active elements 14 are arranged in matrix on a substrate 1 and electrically connected with pixel electrodes 7 and an organic planarization film 9 and a first alignment film 5 are provided. An organic planarization film 10, a counter electrode 8 and a second alignment film 6 are provided on a counter electrode 2. Antiferroelectric liquid crystal 13 is provided between the first alignment film 5 and the second alignment film 6. When the surfaces of the organic planarization films 9, 10 are scanned in arbitrary directions, difference in level between the highest projecting part and the lowest recessing part on a scanning locus corresponding to at least 500μm scanning distance is <=0.1μm and furthermore the first or the second alignment film is subjected to a uniaxial orientation treatment.
